I came across Songbird (http://www.songbirdnest.com/) this week which maybe of interest to you in relation to this post.
This app is still in developer pre-release status, but it's a very interesting idea. I'm very confused about how it works, but it's advertised as a "...desktop media player mashed-up with the Web"
